Rwanda is a landlocked, resource-poor country based in central/eastern Africa. With a population of about 9.7 million, 87 per cent of Rwandans live in rural areas. Rwanda is the most densely populated country in Africa and is one of the poorest countries there. Little emphasis is placed on higher education and less than 10 percent attend high school. Even less attend training schools. Very few Rwandans are able to attend university. Women are especially vulnerable when it comes to education. Their role is that of tending to the children and helping in the fields. After the genocide in 1994, it is estimated that women made up 70% of the population of Rwanda. Because of this it became more important to meet the challenge of empowering women.
