At the request of our students and staff, traditional dance was introduced as a core component of the Ubushobozi Project in 2010. Students study once a week with Kanyenga Ismail (aka “Smiley”), a professional Intore dancer and instructor from Gisenyi. A testament to how integral and inspirational traditional dance is in Rwandan culture and to the Ubushobozi Project participants, the students quickly began performing for visitors. Time and again, visitors’ feedback includes how dance was a highlight of their visit and an unexpected treat. Check out our new costumes! Beautiful, right?
